15 MILES • SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 4 AT 8 A.M.
Share your Walking and Running secrets, in Comments, below
This is an easy walk, with no hills to climb, but it is a long one. Most is on asphalt roadway, with about three miles on shaded state park trails (between dam and visitors center.)
Begin at Lake Waccamaw State Park Visitors Center.
- Check-in & Registration: 7-7:45 a.m.
- The average person walks 3 mph, so expect to spend 4-6 hours, with breaks, touring this beautiful lake.
- If you plan to run, remember that about three miles of the course is on dirt, grass and sand trails of the state park.
- Start is at the park visitors center, about 100 yards from the park entrance
- We will leave the park and walk north on Bella Coola. By walking in this direction, the crowd will be thinned out when you get onto the narrow walking trails of the state park.
- Always walk facing traffic and do not block the traffic lane. Be alert for all vehicles. Walk single file on the road shoulder when necessary.
- You must sign a waiver, register and receive your numbered bib in time to start the event at 8 a.m.
- Bring a water bottle (or bottle of water) that you can refill from stations along the way, provided by kind residents.
- Also bring: We’re not your mother, so we can’t tell you everything you need to bring, but how about some sunscreen,a hat, comfortable shows, socks – heck, why not bring your mother?
- Crossing the concrete dam does take some agility. You will need to step down and then back up about a two-foot drop. If you need assistance, there should be volunteers to help you, or please ask another walker.
Do not attempt this Personal Endurance Challenge if you cannot walk 3 miles easily.
Always consult a health professional before embarking on a new exercise regimen.
